11/02/2007 - Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Has any game in the last few years received more publicity than this Sunday's Patriots-Colts contest? Sure, these two teams have played many memorable games over the last five years, but none of them can compare to this matchup of two undefeateds.
New England and Indianapolis have met seven times since Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy have roamed their respective sidelines, splitting four regular season meetings with the Patriots holding a 2-1 lead in the playoffs. It's interesting to note that the winner of the regular season game has gone on to defeat the other in postseason play, not to mention win the Super Bowl.
The Pats held the upper hand early in the series, taking both sets of meetings in 2003 and 2004 on their way to two championships. They also covered three of the four with one push. However, the Colts didn't just play dead. They fought back and abused New England in 2005 to the tune of 40-21. It was the sixth straight regular season game that went OVER the total, but more importantly, the rivalry had begun to take shape.
For two rivals to have meaningful games, it's extremely helpful to not have one team dominate. How important can a game be if almost everyone knows which team is going to win? That Indianapolis victory signaled an important change in the lifeblood of these two teams, as the Colts were now the team on the rise, while the Pats were mired at.500 at the time.
Both clubs threw up clunkers in the playoffs, but it wouldn't take long for them to bounce back. Tony Dungy's club got the upper hand as Indianapolis won its first seven games in '06. The Colts then went into Foxboro for the fifth straight time in this series and pulled out the 27-20 victory over a 6-1 New England club that was favored by a field goal. Tom Brady threw four interceptions in what could be called his worst game as a pro.
These two teams would meet once again in the playoffs, but this time, the game would be played on Peyton Manning's home turf. The Patriots were favored off the strength of their 8-1 record in the previous nine games, while the Colts had limped home down the stretch winning just three of their final seven regular season contests.
Peyton Manning and Dallas Clark hooked up six times in the game for 137 yards, but it was Manning's 32-yard pass to Bryan Fletcher that set up the game- winning score with only one minute left on the clock. Indianapolis won by four points and racked up 455 total yards to just 319 for the Pats. The Colts, who won and covered for the third straight time vs. New England, were just one game away from winning the Super Bowl, which they easily captured vs. an out- manned Bears team.
THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW
Fast-forward to 2007 and the Patriots and Colts are a combined 15-0. New England has been by far the flashier of the two squads scoring gobs and gobs of points each and every week. The least amount of points the Pats have scored in a game this season has been 34, and nothing can compare to their total of 149 the last three games alone. That's more points than 20 of the other 31 teams have put up the entire season!
Nine clubs have given up fewer points than the Patriots, but all nine have played one less game. You want another fact to chew on? How about winning and covering the last 11 regular season games going back to last season? Not a bad record indeed.
On the other side, the Colts are 7-0 for the third straight season. Their eighth game the last two years came vs. New England and both times they came out on the winning side. Honestly, it wouldn't be a shock if they do it again. Indianapolis is by far the toughest team the Patriots have faced this year, and if the Cowboys and Dolphins can score in the upper 20's against them, then the Colts should be able to score in the upper 30's.
The main question is: can Indy's defense keep the Pats under 40? The answer is a resounding yes. If anyone has watched the Colts this year, it's obvious this defense is just as solid as the one that won them the Super Bowl. They have given up only 28 points the last three games combined, and are second in the NFL in points allowed per game, first in passing "D" and fourth in total defense.
Dallas gave New England quite a scare in Week 6, and the Cowboys are 21st in the league in scoring defense, not to mention being a tad inferior offensively to the reigning Super Bowl champs. What makes this game even more intriguing is the fact that the Patriots are six-point favorites in Indianapolis. Weren't they five-point favorites in Dallas a few weeks back? Has New England improved that much by beating up on Miami and Washington to warrant this type of line on the road against an undefeated Colts squad?
The Pats "over-hyped" machine is in full force and will land flat on its face vs. Manning and the rest of the Indianapolis Colts as Dungy and the boys get their fourth straight win vs. New England.
Take the Colts plus the points in a game that the entire world would much rather watch than the next Super Bowl.
OTHER PLAYS
A few other games are extremely playable this weekend, including the Jets vs. the Redskins. New York will finally have Kellen Clemens under center, and the former Oregon Duck will more than hold his own against Washington.
Take the Jets plus the points.
San Diego has picked up steam of late with three straight victories to move into a first-place tie with Kansas City. The offense has clicked for 104 points in the three "W's" while allowing only 27. However, two of the games were played at home and the only road tally came against the Broncos.
Minnesota is 2-5 on this season, but four of the last six were played on the road. Look for a huge effort this Sunday on the back end of two straight home games.
Take the Vikings plus the points.
After going a week without the popular Sunday and Monday night OVER/UNDER parlay (with the World Series taking center stage), it's time to get back into the swing of things with the Sunday night OVER followed by the Monday night UNDER.
Just remember to save most of the money for the most anticipated game since last year's AFC Championship contest.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds
Will he or won't he? Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.
Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.
"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."
Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.
Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.
But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.
Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback. It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.
Here are the football odds as seen at MySportsbook.com and subject to change after February 10, 2007 if not locked in prior to that date.
