Tigers use five-run fourth to down Rangers

Baseball Betting Lines

04/24/2010 - Arlington, TX (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera keyed a five-run fourth inning with back-to-back RBI doubles and the Tigers bullpen hurled six scoreless innings, as Detroit doubled up Texas, 8-4.

Johnny Damon poked an early two-run double, walked three times and scored twice for Detroit, which dropped the opener to this four-game series Friday on Elvis Andrus' game-winning hit in the ninth.

Brad Thomas, making an emergency start in place of Dontrelle Willis, pitched three innings and gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks. Willis was scratched due to illness.

The bullpen scattered three hits and issued one walk the rest of the way with Eddie Bonine (2-0) picking up the win.

Scott Feldman (1-2), who had his start pushed back a day by a stomach virus, was hit around for eight runs -- four earned -- on eight hits and four walks in 3 2/3 frames. Two of those runs scored on a wild pitch.

Vladimir Guerrero had three hits and three RBI for the Rangers, who had won two in a row after dropping six straight. Andrus added two hits and drove in one.

Trailing 4-3, Detroit rallied to score five runs with two outs in the fourth and take control of the game.

The Tigers had a pair in scoring position with two down when Feldman uncorked a wild pitch. Rangers catcher Taylor Teagarden couldn't track the ball off the backstop and Ramon Santiago chugged home from second behind Ryan Raburn to put the Tigers ahead, 5-4.

Damon walked and stole second before Ordonez and Cabrera cracked back-to-back RBI doubles to chase Feldman. Doug Mathis took over and surrendered a run- scoring single to Brennan Boesch, whose first career RBI gave Detroit an 8-4 advantage.

The Tiger bullpen posted zeros the rest of the way. Thomas gave way to Bonine to start the bottom half and only three Texas batsmen reached base in his three innings of work, one on an error.

Joel Zumaya entered in the seventh for Detroit and dominated by fanning five in two innings. Michael Young beat out an infield single in the ninth before Jose Valverde closed it out.

Guerrero's two-run double opened the scoring in the first inning, and Texas went up 4-0 with run-scoring hits by Andrus and Guerrero in the second.

Detroit countered with a three-spot an inning later. Adam Everett and Austin Jackson opened the third with base hits and Damon roped a double into right field. Both runners scored and Damon was able to take third on the throw home. Ordonez followed with an RBI groundout.

Game Notes

Thomas was making his first start since 2001. He's appeared in four games out of the bullpen for Detroit this season...Everett left the game in the third inning with a strained right hamstring for Detroit...Zumaya has yet to give up a run in 12 innings of relief this season. He also has 13 strikeouts...Mathis pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up just three hits with three walks and two punchouts...Cabrera drove in his major league-leading 22nd run...Damon's stolen base was his first of the season.

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch

Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.

Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
